Joseph Parker used Junior Fa fight delay to get operation on elbows

Joseph Parker has elaborated on an old injury that resurfaced in the build-up to his fight with Junior Fa last year which, due to the bout's delay, was addressed with another surgery.

Parker told 1 NEWS this afternoon he has had another surgery on his elbows after having them first operated on three years ago.

"Before the fight was postponed, we had a few problems with the elbows," Parker told 1 NEWS.

"Inflammation, swelling up — bad pain. It was limiting a lot of things.

"We were icing it every day, putting Deep Heat on it, finding ways to make it feel better each day."

However, despite the pain, Parker said he and trainer Kevin Barry were willing to push through it for the fight had it gone ahead with the originally-scheduled December 12 date.

"There wasn't any doubt, we would've carried on because the fight was already set. A lot of people were already tuning in for the fight and I didn't want to be the reason that the fight couldn't go ahead."

However, with Kiwi rival Fa withdrawing due to medical reasons late in November, Parker saw his chance to have surgery.

The bout is now scheduled to take place on February 27, and while Parker still isn't at 100 per cent now he believes he will be on the night. "They should've fought me before because now I have no excuses."

Boxing Joseph Parker vs Junior Fa Live Now Set For February 27

Previously scheduled for December, the bout was postponed after blood tests revealed Fa was suffering from a health issue that required the highly-rated, undefeated prospect to undergo surgery.

The official event Doctor appointed for the Parker v Fa fight night, Dr Dave Renata, yesterday confirmed that Fa’s recent surgery had been successful.

“Junior’s surgery was a success and he is well and truly on track to be fully fit and in very good health for the rescheduled date on February 27,” Dr Renata said.

Parker’s advisor, David Higgins of Duco Events, said this was great news and the exact result they had been waiting to hear so they could confirm the new date for fans anxious to see the biggest heavyweight clash featuring two Kiwis ever to be staged in New Zealand.

“While the postponement of the fight was disappointing, the most important thing is that both fighters are at their very best – and there are no excuses – when they step into the ring,” Higgins said.

Higgins pointed to the record-setting 2009 showdown between David Tua and Shane Cameron, which was also delayed after Cameron broke his hand during a tune-up fight.

Joseph Parker vs Junior Fa Fight in Auckland, New Zealand

Joseph Parker vs Junior Fa is an upcoming heavyweight professional boxing match contested between former WBO champion Joseph Parker and WBO interim Oriental champion Junior Fa. The bout is scheduled to take place on 27 February 2021, at the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

PARKER VS FA FIGHT

The all-Kiwi heavyweight showdown has been rebooked.

An all-Kiwi heavyweight clash goes down on Saturday, Feb. 27, as former WBO champion Joseph Parker meets Junior Fa at the Auckland's Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, live and exclusively on DAZN in the United States.

Initially, Parker and Fa were set to meet on Dec. 11, but the latter heavyweight had to bow out after blood tests revealed that he had a health issue that required surgery.

After losing his belt to Anthony Joshua and his subsequent bout against Dillian Whyte, Parker (27-2, 21 KOs), a native of New Zealand, won three consecutive fights, with all of them coming via stoppage. Most recently, Parker stopped Shawndell Winters in the fifth round of the Mikey Garcia-Jessie Vargas undercard in February. Despite the fact that it will be nearly one year between fights, the 28-year-old Parker is looking to get back in there and settle who is the king of the Kiwis, while making another run at the gold.
